A switchgear panel can utilise circuit breakers which automatically protect the system by isolating a circuit when faults or short circuits occur. Detecting and isolating dangerous faults within micro-seconds to minimise and restrict electrical damage to only the area of the fault.
Circuit breakers and fuses are designed to safely interrupt and clear high fault currents, which could attain significantly higher levels than the systems normal operating current. Circuit breakers are available in various types and the following are widely used in sub-stations – Air Insulated, Oil Insulated, SF6 Gas Insulated, and a Vacuum type.
